    Cephalopod-inspired soft robots: design criteria and modelling frameworks

    Cephalopods (i.e. octopuses and squids) are taken as a source of inspiration for the development of a new kind of underwater soft robot. These cephalopod-inspired, soft-bodied vehicles entail a hollow, elastic shell capable of performing a routine of recursive ingestion and expulsion of discrete slugs of fluids via the actual inflation and deflation of the elastic chamber. This routine allows the vehicle to propel itself in water in a very similar fashion to that of cephalopods. This mode of pulsed jetting enabled by the actual body shape variations can ideally benefit from the positive feedback provided by impulse-rich discontinuous jet formation and added mass recovery. This work is complemented by extensive modelling efforts which are meant to aid in the process of mechanical design optimization as well as providing an advanced tool for biomechanical studies of living cephalopods

    Beaconing Performance in IEEE 802.11p Vehicular Networks: the Effect of Radio Channel Congestion

    In this paper, we study the performance of the beaconing mechanism underlying active safety vehicular applications in presence of different levels of channel congestion. The importance of this study lies in the fact that channel congestion is considered a major factor influencing communication performance in vehicular networks, and that ours is the first investigation of the effects of congestion based on extensive, real-world measurements. The results of our study reveal that congestion has a profound impact on the most important beaconing performance metric, namely, packet (beacon) inter reception time, influencing not only the average value, but also the shape of the distribution. Congestion also considerably increases the frequency of potentially dangerous situation-awareness blackouts, with a likely negative impact on the effectiveness of active safety applications. Our study also reveals that multihop propagation of beaconing information can be used as an effective means of lessening the negative impact of congestion on beaconing performance

    A Comparison between High-order Temporal Integration Methods Applied to the Discontinuous Galerkin Discretized Euler Equations

    Abstract In this work we present a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) space approximation coupled with two high-order temporal integration methods for the numerical solution of time-dependent compressible flows. The time integration methods analyzed are the explicit Strong-Stability-Preserving Runge-Kutta (SSPRK) and the Two Implicit Advanced Step-point (TIAS) schemes. Their accuracy and efficiency are evaluated by means of an inviscid test case for which an exact solution is available. The study is carried out for several time-steps using different polynomial order approximations and several levels of grid refinement. The effect of mesh irregularities on the accuracy is also investigated by considering randomly perturbed meshes. The analysis of the results has the twofold objective of (i) assessing the performances of the temporal schemes in the context of the high-order DG discretization and(ii) determining if high-order implicit schemes can displace widely used high-order explicit schemes

    Functionalization of a layered oxide with organic moieties: towards hybrid proton conductors

    The design of innovative proton conductors for intermediate-temperature fuel cells, closing the gap between PEMFC and SOFC, is a forefront research theme in materials chemistry. [1] Layered perovskites with the Dion-Jacobson structure (ALaNb2O7) have bidimensional lanthanum niobate sheets, separated by a layer of A+ cations. These can be substituted by a variety of molecules with soft chemistry, to yield inorganic-organic hybrids. In particular, the intercalation of amines, alcohols, carboxylic or phosphonic acids, and their covalent binding to the sheets has been demonstrated recently. [2-4]We present preliminary results on the intercalation and covalent bonding of different organic molecules, in order to develop hybrid proton conductors for use in intermediate temperature fuel cells. Smaller molecules (such as alcohols) are intercalated to expand the interlayer space, to form intermediates for the further binding of proton carriers such as imidazoles or sulfonates.The intercalation process is investigated by XRD (to measure the interlayer distance) and TGA (to determine the weight loss upon thermal decomposition). NMR is applied to confirm the covalent bonding between the organic and oxide parts. The intercalation behavior of different functional groups is explained in terms of van der Waals and/or hydrogen bonding between organic chains. The interplay of theory (ab initio and periodic DFT) and experiment allowed us to elucidate the 1H and 13C-NMR spectra, and to investigate the nature of interaction (i.e. ionic or covalent bond) of the organic chains with the interlayer surface

    Sono passati più di venti anni dalla pubblicazione di Being Digital, il celebre libro di Nicholas Negroponte, all’interno del quale il fondatore del MIT Media Lab affermava che “il passaggio dagli atomi ai bit è irreversibile e inarrestabile”. Tale preannunciata rivoluzione, sembra oggi giunta a una fase più matura coinvolgendo sia la sfera pubblica che quella privata, le professioni, la politica e l’economia. Il digitale, facilitando e razionalizzando di giorno in giorno processi precedentemente analogici, è diventato ubiquo. Se da un lato gli aspetti positivi di queste trasformazioni sono evidenti, altrettanto palesi appaiono le aporie: dalla dipendenza tecnologica al rapporto con i social media, fino alla diffusione di una superficiale cultura dell’immagine che mette a rischio gli aspetti più complessi della disciplina architettonica. Il digitale maturo è caratterizzato inoltre dal fenomeno dei Big Data e dalla conseguente diffusione dei metodi di Machine Learning, che mettono ulteriormente in discussione i fondamenti ermeneutici del metodo scientifico, indicando l’inizio di una nuova era in cui non sarebbe più necessario costruire regole e formule per descrivere e comprendere i fenomeni naturali, ma sarebbe sufficiente trovare delle “correlazioni” computazionali (The end of theory, Anderson 2008). In questo numero abbiamo l’opportunità di tornare su un tema sicuramente dibattuto, ma sempre attuale per il frastagliato mondo dell’architettura, che come altri settori ha subito e adottato il digitale e i suoi metodi.It is been over twenty years since the well-known book by Nicholas Negroponte Being Digital has been published. In this book the founder of the MIT Media Lab stated that “change from atoms to bits is irrevocable and unstoppable”. It seems today that this announced revolution is in an advanced stage, investing the public and the private sphere, the professions, the politics, the economics. The digital, by simplifying and rationalizing analogic processes, is today a ubiquitous phenomenon. On one hand positive aspects may appear evident, on the other aporias are undeniable. Technological dependency, pathological relations with social medias, the diffusion of a superficial culture of the image that compromises the most complex aspects of architectural practice are just few of the problems that the digital may provoke. The contemporary phase of the digital is also characterized by the Big Data phenomenon and by the resulting Machine Learning methods. They challenge the hermeneutics principles of the scientific methods showing the beginning of a new era in which it will be possible just to find computational “correlations” (The end of theory - Anderson 2008) instead of rules and formulas. In this issue of IN FOLIO entitled “Utopia and dystopia in the digital project”, we have the opportunity to go back to a topic that has been long discussed. Nevertheless, it remains an actual theme for architecture. Digital techniques affected the way a project is produced, displayed, measured and communicated. Just as in our life, in our cities and in our offices, data become more and more important. Just think about how the BIM and its growing diffusion enrich architectural projects with digital information.     Flagellate Underwater Robotics at Macroscale: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

    Prokaryotic flagellum is considered as the only known example of a biological “wheel,” a system capable of converting the action of rotatory actuator into a continuous propulsive force. For this reason, flagella are an interesting case study in soft robotics and they represent an appealing source of inspiration for the design of underwater robots. A great number of flagellum-inspired devices exists, but these are all characterized by a size ranging in the micrometer scale and mostly realized with rigid materials. Here, we present the design and development of a novel generation of macroscale underwater propellers that draw their inspiration from flagellated organisms. Through a simple rotatory actuation and exploiting the capability of the soft material to store energy when interacting with the surrounding fluid, the propellers attain different helical shapes that generate a propulsive thrust. A theoretical model is presented, accurately describing and predicting the kinematic and the propulsive capabilities of the proposed solution. Different experimental trials are presented to validate the accuracy of the model and to investigate the performance of the proposed design.     Valvular Heart Disease Patients on Edoxaban or Warfarin in the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 Trial

    The use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) instead of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and coexisting valvular heart disease (VHD) is of substantial interest.This study explored outcomes in patients with AF with and without VHD in the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 (Effective Anticoagulation with factor Xa Next Generation in Atrial Fibrillation-Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction 48) trial, comparing edoxaban with warfarin.Valvular heart disease was defined as history or baseline echocardiography evidence of at least moderate aortic/mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis, or prior valve surgery (bioprosthesis replacement, valve repair, valvuloplasty). Patients with moderate to severe mitral stenosis or mechanical heart valves were excluded from the trial. Comparisons were made of rates of stroke/systemic embolic event (SSEE), major bleeding, additional efficacy and safety outcomes, as well as net clinical outcomes, in patients with or without VHD treated with edoxaban or warfarin, using adjusted Cox proportional hazards.After adjustment for multiple baseline characteristics, compared with no-VHD patients (n = 18,222), VHD patients (n = 2,824) had a similar rate of SSEE but higher rates of death (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.40; 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.26 to 1.56; p 0.001), major adverse cardiovascular events (HR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.43; p 0.001), and major bleeding (HR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.03 to 1.42; p = 0.02). Higher-dose edoxaban regimen had efficacy similar to warfarin in the presence of VHD (for SSEE, HR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.44 to 1.07, in patients with VHD, and HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.77 to 1.07, in patients without VHD; p interaction [pThe presence of VHD increased the risk of death, major adverse cardiovascular events, and major bleeding but did not affect the relative efficacy or safety of higher-dose edoxaban versus warfarin in AF.     Sex Differences in Heart Failure: What Do We Know?

    : Heart failure (HF) remains an important global health issue, substantially contributing to morbidity and mortality. According to epidemiological studies, men and women face nearly equivalent lifetime risks for HF. However, their experiences diverge significantly when it comes to HF subtypes: men tend to develop HF with reduced ejection fraction more frequently, whereas women are predominantly affected by HF with preserved ejection fraction. This divergence underlines the presence of numerous sex-based disparities across various facets of HF, encompassing aspects such as risk factors, clinical presentation, underlying pathophysiology, and response to therapy. Despite these apparent discrepancies, our understanding of them is far from complete, with key knowledge gaps still existing. Current guidelines from various professional societies acknowledge the existence of sex-based differences in HF management, yet they are lacking in providing explicit, actionable recommendations tailored to these differences. In this comprehensive review, we delve deeper into these sex-specific differences within the context of HF, critically examining associated definitions, risk factors, and therapeutic strategies. We provide a specific emphasis on aspects exclusive to women, such as the impact of pregnancy-induced hypertension and premature menopause, as these unique factors warrant greater attention in the broader HF discussion. Additionally, we aim to clarify ongoing controversies and knowledge gaps pertaining to the pharmacological treatment of HF and the sex-specific indications for cardiac implantable electronic devices. By shining a light on these issues, we hope to stimulate a more nuanced understanding and promote the development of more sex-responsive approaches in HF management
